Vehicle Transit Permit: Eligibility and Requirements

For the best use of this application, use Internet Explorer 10.0 or 11.0, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome. Currently, the online application is not compatible with smartphones or tablets. The use of these devices may result in an error and failure to issue a permit.

If you buy a car or light truck and the seller keeps the Texas license plates, you may print a Vehicle Transit Permit to legally drive the vehicle home or to your local county tax office. License Plates will be issued by your local county tax office when you title and register your vehicle in Texas.

  1. You must have an active email account and Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print your permit.
  2. Only one Vehicle Transit Permit may be issued per vehicle.
  3. Only issued for passenger cars and light trucks.
  4. Valid for 5 calendar days from the date of issuance. The start date is the day the permit is issued.
  5. Enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) carefully. If we cannot match the VIN, a Vehicle Transit Permit cannot be issued.
  1. You must maintain at least the minimum amount of liability insurance required by Texas law.
  2. A temporary permit may not be issued to any vehicle that is salvage or nonrepairable.
  3. If traveling out of state, verify that this permit is valid for operation in that state.
  4. Reprint will be allowed prior to the expiration date of the Vehicle Transit Permit.
